The journal records the trip by Fort Smith, the Arkansas, Gregg's road, Little River, the Canadian, Santa Fé Trail, Albuquerque, Rio Grande, Rio Membres, Chihuahua road, Tucson, the Gila, the Colorado, the desert, Warner's ranch, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, and San Francisco. Goulding notes preparations, country and wild life, Indian settlements, and events. Goulding copied John Hoyt's notes on the Spanish Trail. There are sketches, letters and notes for 1864-1865, family and hospital accounts.

Goulding joined the Knickerbocker Exploring Company which traveled from New York to California in 1849. He was engaged in the manufacture of surgical instruments in New York and he was appointed by the Surgeon General to McClennon Hospital near Philadelphia. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1864 and was appointed to U.S. Medical Museum in Washington in 1865.
